  18. <p>     Colombian cocaine cartel leaders are apparently investing
  19. in precious gems. "Cash is a pain," says a DEA official. "It's
  20. bulky if you move it, traceable if you bank it, and it mildews
  21. if you bury it." Which may explain why Colombians have been
  22. reported buying up jewels--principally diamonds--in
  23. Antwerp, Amsterdam and Hong Kong. U.S. agents don't think these
  24. buyers are Christmas shopping. "You can transport millions of
  25. dollars' worth of diamonds in your back pocket," says an
  26. investigator. Furthermore, diamonds don't rot when stored in
  27. the underground caches favored by Colombian dons.
